In response to the urgent global challenges posed by the Climate Emergency and Biodiversity Crisis, the Master of Architecture programme at the University of East London is committed to redefining the role of architecture in society. Our 0% Carbon and 100% People manifesto emphasises architecture’s potential as a radical tool for creating inclusive spaces and addressing these crises. Our students and faculty share a dedication to “care”—for both our planet and its inhabitants—viewing architecture as a profound responsibility and exploring new forms of living, knowledge transfer, and architectural practice. Through research and knowledge exchange, our students explore critical design and learning methodologies, addressing global contemporary challenges and their impact on diverse communities. Our pedagogical approach emphasises five main approaches of work and research for a post-carbon future: 1. Contextual Responsibility: Students are encouraged to design with local resources and closed-loop systems, celebrating site-specific value and enhancing biodiversity. 2. Regenerative & Ecological Practice: Moving beyond sustainability, we adopt holistic design approaches to restore ecological balance. 3. Socio-cultural & Economic Transformation: We empower communities through equitable design, fostering justice and inclusivity. 4. Participation & Democratisation: By promoting co-authorship in design, students create resilient, inclusive urban spaces with community involvement. 5. Material Exploration & Technological Innovation: Hands-on exploration of low-carbon materials and integrated technologies enriches architectural practice for a post-carbon future. Through these approaches, our programme equips future architects to engage meaningfully with global challenges, driving positive change towards a more equitable world and regenerative practices.
