As urbanization in India has increased, the planning of public spaces and parks has become a formidable challenge. For the future, adequate planning is required in the ageing cities. Public spaces are essential to the physical and social functioning of a metropolis, and the design of these spaces is crucial. People require public spaces for interaction and community gathering. Consequently, it is essential that the design and use of public spaces correspond with the concept of a city as an expression and existence. In this regard, public spaces are more influential in terms of human unity, communism, and cultural ties. In a city, public spaces include waterfronts, rail and metro stations, bus stands and bus-stops, markets, playgrounds, gardens, maidan (open ground), sports club, footpath, road, etc., in addition to other places designed or designated for public use. Public gatherings for recreational, political, and social purposes unite the various city districts. The purpose of this paper is to examine the diverse perspectives on public spaces expressed by authors over the past three decades and to develop a framework for policymakers. Through a literature evaluation, the paper provides a comprehensive comprehension of public spaces and aids policymakers in implementing the development plan and local policies. The literature review focuses on public space research in Mumbai over the past three decades and the identification of policy gaps. The research yields guidelines for modifying policies and making decisions.
