More than half of New York’s public schools have their own school gardens. Since the 1980s, school gardening in the US has gradually become a national movement. Today it is not only a space for conducting didactic activities, but also a place fulfilling primarily educational and social function. Activities in the school garden support the emotional development of the child and teach teamwork. Thanks to the orientation of didactics towards direct learning, didactic processes are much easier, and their effects are more quickly assimilated and consolidated. In addition to the obvious benefits of learning in green surroundings, children experience ecological and vegetative processes and have the opportunity to learn about water and waste management, which builds their good habits and vision for a healthy city. In studying the role and importance of green school grounds, it was necessary to take advantage of the achievements of many fields of science. It is a broad and interdisciplinary subject. Unexplored, and at the same time extremely up-to-date in the era of changing standards of urban development and ecology. During the presentation, the results of own research on school gardens and their importance in the context of urban development will be presented, highlighting innovative examples of architecture, taking into account model and most important objects for the theme of urban development. Methods adopted during the tests are inductive and deductive. The research is based on literature and subject studies, supplemented by inventory studies.
I am a PhD candidate at the Doctoral School of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. I am passionate about architecture, combining it with ecological aspects. The subject of my research is contemporary trends in the design of school gardens. I hope that in the future every school will include an element of greenery and ecology – in the curriculum, architecture or interior of the building.
