This paper aims to examine the emergent use of ChatGPT, a conversational AI system, in urban community activities. We adopt a qualitative approach to explore how ChatGPT can support and enhance community engagement and interaction in various contexts. We draw on Deleuze’s concepts of emergence and becoming to analyze the potential of ChatGPT in creating new forms of communication and collaboration among urban communities. We propose five potential cases for ChatGPT in community activities, such as facilitating social learning, promoting civic participation, fostering creative expression, supporting community building, and enhancing community resilience. We also discuss the challenges and opportunities of ChatGPT’s emergent use in urban communities, such as ethical issues, technical limitations, and social implications. This paper contributes to the literature on conversational AI and urban communities by providing a theoretical lens and practical examples for ChatGPT’s emergent use in community activities.
