Since the start of the global pandemic (Covid-19) life as we knew it has altered dramatically. How do the general public now view their public spaces and how do they act within? During the international lockdowns many took the opportunities to explore the outdoors through permission to exercise, yet what of our urban public spaces at the heart of our cities? Through a Cypriot case study investigating the public areas of the Limassol Medieval castle, the presentation examines levels of interaction, questioning how design interventions can positively increase social and spatial exchanges. Approached from an interdisciplinary perspective, design and artistic installation merge with social science to first; tackle the lack of current data and publications surrounding the subject of public space and their usage in Cyprus, and second; display design outcomes which encourage socialisation and interaction. Through an installation of socially distanced visuals; embracing colour, humour, play permission and above all safe possibilities for interaction the area was temporarily revitalised. With a digital interactive context, the installation provided a hybrid space of communication, allowing users to be present in physical space yet experience place digitally through remote interaction. The research displays a playful engagement model for enhanced interaction in public space aimed at fellow designers’, city planners, and academics. RE-PLACED additionally promotes a methodology for social and spatial change which will be adaptable to any underutilised urban public space setting.
