Abstract

With tremendous growth in usage of smart technologies in smart cities, many universities are considering adopting the smart city concept in their campuses. Universities can be considered as a small town because the same problems such as governance issues, infrastructure issues, resource usage problems etc. They can be a testbed for smart cities as they can test new infrastructure and technologies on a limited area. The study will explore how university stakeholders transform university campus into a living lab for smart city. The living lab concentrates a community of students, academics, professional service units, and industrial partners working together to co-design approaches to solving urban issues. In order to address the research questions proposed, the case study methodology will be applied to understanding smart campus in the context of UK. Two cases in the UK have been taken into consideration for this research, including University of Birmingham (UoB) and Cranfield University. The study will combine documentary information with research techniques of collecting primary data like semi-structured interviews to study specific cases.
