The congested and overcrowded capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, and its informal, dynamic development with multifaceted and complex city-oriented activities cause a shift in a building’s intended functions. This paper will discuss the unrecognised practises of the many built-in functions. It will also depict the alterations to the building’s interior, exterior, and neighbourhood context. Multiple case studies with drawing analysis, before-and-after comparisons, and functional design gap identification were incorporated into the methodology. This will initiate a discussion between various stakeholders involved in any given form of multi-user-oriented fluid design versus flexible programme-specific conventional design. This study serves as the basis for an analysis of the effects of the adaptive built environment on the surrounding neighbourhood. To implement the effective use of altered functionality with an incremental and flexible design approach, the purpose of this research is to develop a hypothesis regarding the design and policy of future urban built forms that takes into account the relevant factors.
