Promoting Youth Innovations In Urban Solutions for Climate Action

Urbanization had great contributions to humanity as cities continued to grow, expand and become centers for innovation, industrial revolutions in its first, second, third, fourth and fifth generations and more to come. Innovation in cities are endless. smart city solutions and technological advancement has contributed to increase in quality-of-life standards, environmental conservation, better planned city networks and neighborhoods and climate action. In cities around the world various youth groups, whether community advocates or students are developing their own solutions and innovative projects that contribute to effective climate action and advance green solutions, technologies and energy saving methods that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help them enjoy their cities and urban settings the way they want. The paper will be presenting the experience of the Author in organizing and convening youth for climate action labs, discussions platforms and exhibitions in Kuwait and Cairo. The paper will explain how youth innovations labs and projects can influence and support city leaders and their ideas, initiatives and innovative climate solutions in Biodiversity protection, recycling, renewables and aggrotech can help influencing and shaping countries directions and nationally determined commitments to COP. It will also conclude that the young generation innovations if widely promoted can largely contribute to sustainability in cities with their innovative recycling of waste, simple renewable solutions and urban agriculture techniques. The Paper will conclude by presenting the policy and practice impact of the Youth for Climate action Initiative in Kuwait and Cairo.

Biography

Dr. Tarek Azmy Mahmoud Elsheikh (Egypt), currently serving as Director of the Urban Training and Studies Institute of the Housing and Building Research Center in Egypt. Before that until January 2023 he was UN Resident Coordinator to The State of Kuwait. Dr. Elsheikh holds Bsc., Msc and Phd. in Architecture Engineering from Cairo University and Msc. in International Policy studies from Bristol University. Dr. El-sheikh has experience in training and policy advise in the fiels of sustainable development.

Hazel McArthur is a multilingual and highly educated scholar with extensive work experience across diverse sectors in four different countries, including a prestigious internship at the United Nations in Kuwait. Currently, she is pursuing a PhD in Politics at The University of Edinburgh. Hazel’s academic background includes a BA (Hons) degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, and an MSc degree in International Banking, Finance, and Risk Management. Her interdisciplinary education, combined with her extensive international experience, provides her with a distinctive perspective on the intersections of these fields within multicultural settings.
