Mt. Fuji, Japan’s highest peak designated as world heritage site, is now revered globally. The surrounding area, including natural scenic spots such as Fuji Five Lakes, has inspired numerous works of art, notably Katsushika Hokusai’s “36 Views of Mt. Fuji” in 18-19th centuries. Shrines dedicated to this sacred mountain as deity are dispersed throughout the region, serving as significant places of faith. Abundant water resources from springs and rivers, utilized for industrial water or hydroelectric power, along with forest resources, have facilitated the development of various modern industries around Mt. Fuji. The modern paper and pulp industry, which emerged in late 19th century, exemplifies modern industry reliant on water and electricity, thereby supporting the economy of surrounding cities. Around the year 2000, industrial landscape (technoscape) formed by majestic Mt. Fuji and paper mills began to be valued by civic groups and on social media. In 2015, the city government finally declared “Factory Night View City.” This study aims to elucidate value of technoscape formed in Fuji Area. It examines in detail natural and cultural conditions that facilitated establishment of paper and pulp industry in this area. Additionally, it explores the relationship between local culture associated with paper, the faith in abundant spring water accompanied by animism, and the historical paper industry. Furthermore, it clarifies the specific aspects of technoscape formed by magnificent paper mills, historical hydroelectric facilities, and freight railways through field surveys. It also organizes the perspectives of value recognition in media and art to manifest their significance.
