Rivers have long been recognized as vital heritage sites, serving as essential natural resources and cultural landmarks intertwined with community identity and traditions. The Riverine Cultural Landscape (RCL) embodies a unique intersection of ecological significance and human cultural practices, where local narratives and rituals reflect the history and values of riverine communities. Studies have emphasized the need for integrative preservation approaches that honor traditional knowledge while addressing contemporary environmental challenges, underscoring rivers’ role as living heritage that sustains both biodiversity and cultural continuity. This research explored the river as a vital heritage site embedded in the socio-cultural fabric of communities along the central riverine areas of the River Niger in Nigeria. A comprehensive set of interview questions targeting the historical, cultural, environmental, social, and economic dimensions of the RCL was administered to native people in three communities along the riverine landscape. The qualitative data were content analyzed, revealing a deeper understanding of how rivers contribute to community identity and livelihood, the challenges they face, and the conservation efforts required to preserve them. Ultimately, the findings underscore the necessity of integrative approaches to sustain both the ecological and cultural integrity of riverine landscapes, highlighting the extent to which theories are grounded in the unique culture of riverine communities in Central Nigeria.
