This presentation delves into the transformation of a plateau site on the banks of the Claro River in Talca, initially formed by a process of depositing debris, now serving as an expansive public space managed by a dedicated group focused on the conservation and restoration of native species. Collaborative research underpins this endeavor, aimed at advocating for sustainable policies by harnessing the Claro River’s potential within the city. The primary focus of this investigation centers on the development of CENEU Park: an ecological restoration initiative integrating a viewpoint and an open classroom on the former landfill, specifically designed for environmental education purposes. Acknowledging the Claro River as a significant asset within Talca’s urban landscape spurred the conceptualization of an educational space aligning with sustainability objectives. This presentation will emphasize the multifaceted participatory methodology integral to the project’s design and implementation phases. This inclusive approach facilitated engagement with diverse stakeholders, ensuring their voices and perspectives played an integral role in shaping the park’s evolution. By examining the transformation of this public space into an educational hub, the presentation aims to underscore the pivotal role of repurposing neglected urban areas to foster environmental awareness and sustainable practices. This case study underscores the symbiotic relationship between ecological restoration, urban planning, and community engagement, offering insights into replicable strategies for executing similar initiatives in diverse urban contexts. Such initiatives hold promise in promoting environmental education and propelling the advancement of sustainability agendas.
