Abstract
The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in unprecedented challenges for the higher education sector. Those institutions delivering programmes in China needed to respond first and adapt to online delivery with very little notice. Queen Mary University of London’s Joint Education Institute in Xi’an China started remote teaching on the 24th of February. This paper outlines the authors journey and lessons learned from an initial delivery in weeks 1-4 to full online Team Based Learning week 7 and answer the research question: What elements are required to maintain the learning outcomes during the transition of a design heavy module taught via Team Based Learning to online delivery. The methodology employed leveraged on several works that identified the various elements, issues and strategies for transitioning a module to online delivery. The method developed, experience gained and lessons learned provide valuable insight to colleagues who are making the transition to remote teaching later in the crisis or during more normal times in the future.
Dr Andrew holds the position of Senior Lecturer (Associate Prof) within the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London and teaches at the school’s joint education institute in Xi’an China. Before joining QMUL Andrew held the post of APAC Engineering Manager Wood PLC and Head of Department of Mechanical Materials and Manufacturing Engineering at The University of Nottingham’s Malaysia Campus. Dr Andrew holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE), is a Chartered Engineer, (CEng) a Chartered Scientist (CEng) and is a fellow of IOM3, IMM.
