Re-evaluating Authenticity in Historic Mosque Conservation: Towards a Continuity Centered Approach

Abstract

This paper addresses the increasing tension between material authenticity and continuity in earthen architecture, particularly historic mosques conservation in Diriyah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. If applying conventional conservation methodologies without considering the specific context of historic mosques in the region; it creates a methodological disconnect that fails to acknowledge the living, functional nature of historic mosques. This paper calls for an intangible emphasis in authenticity assessment, expanding beyond formalist conventions from form-centered to function-oriented, advocating for a more contextual approach to historic mosques that prioritizes continuity. Using Al-Dhuwaihrah Mosque in Diriyah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a primary case study, this paper highlights how conventional definitions of authenticity can conflict with Islamic teachings that encourage adaptation for the sake of worshippers: expanding prayer spaces, improving comfort, and maintaining endowments are all religiously rewarded actions, yet can be deemed intrusive in conventional cultural heritage conservation discourse. Referencing religious texts and previous research on the topic alongside critical analysis of conservation policies and international charters, this paper advocates for a more context-sensitive and spiritually grounded conservation approach for historic mosques.
