This paper examines the safeguarding of architectural and intangible cultural heritage in Rijal Al-Maa, with particular focus on Al-Qatt Al-Asiri as a key element of living heritage. In the context of Saudi Vision 2030, the study explores how current conservation and documentation practices address both the physical built environment and associated intangible cultural expressions. The research critically investigates existing safeguarding strategies in Saudi Arabia, evaluating their effectiveness in preserving vernacular architecture alongside community-based artistic traditions. It further considers methodological approaches for capturing multi-stakeholder perspectives, including local communities, practitioners, and policymakers, in order to better understand conservation challenges within traditional built environments. Adopting a qualitative, discussion-based framework, the paper highlights gaps between policy-driven conservation efforts and lived cultural practices. Particular attention is given to the sustainability of Al-Qatt Al-Asiri as both an artistic tradition and a cultural identity marker within heritage sites. The study proposes that effective safeguarding requires integrated frameworks that prioritize community engagement, education, and innovation. By aligning conservation practices with the socio-cultural objectives of Vision 2030, the paper argues for a more holistic approach to heritage preservation that sustains both tangible and intangible dimensions. These insights aim to contribute to broader discussions on heritage management in rapidly modernizing societies.
Wafa Alzahrani – I’m a fourth-year architecture student at Lancaster University with a strong interest in heritage, cultural identity, and the relationship between traditional architecture and contemporary urban development. My research, “Al-Qatt and Living Architectural Heritage,” explores the integration of tangible and intangible heritage in Rijal Al-Maa within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030. Through my work, I aim to contribute to heritage conservation by developing approaches that bridge tradition and modernity, with a focus on sustainable cultural development.
