Nowadays, with narrative design being widely mentioned in the design field and the transformation of contemporary museums, the words Narrative and Museum are inevitably intertwined. At the same time, with the development of technology, the audience’s perception of museum exhibitions has gradually changed. Museum increasingly becomes the place to live, to participate in a story through multiple stimuli, and in which to share one’s own emotions with others; a dynamic place that does not limit itself to exhibiting but that marks the passage from the idea of a “museum of the collection” to that of a “museum of narration”(Studio Azzurro, 2011). This interweaving also profoundly affects the Territorial Museum. In a territorial museum, “exhibits” not only refer to the actual witnesses of history – artifacts – but also include displays (models, sculptures, installations, Etc.) that support the narrative of local history. They embody local culture and history and illustrate the particular identity of local culture in the territorial museum exhibition narrative: local culture as a design concept and narrative theme. This entangled and intertwined relationship between narrative design and culture will be a topic worthy of in-depth study for exhibition narratives in territorial museums. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between local culture and narrative design to analyze the potential of narrative design approaches in territorial museums; and through workshop activities themed around the exhibition narrative for Territorial Museum, to explore the feasibility of applying narrative design to territorial museums in specific cultural regions of China.
