UNESCO announced “Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage” in 2003. The convention will come to the 20th year in 2023. The article 14 of this convention focuses on the function and the role of “education”. It is extremely difficult challenge to all works about intangible cultural heritage education. As late as 2016, “Cultural Heritage Preservation Act” of Taiwan was amended, and then the cultural heritage was finally divided into two parts, tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Intangible cultural heritage include: (1) Traditional Performing Arts, (2) Traditional Craftsmanship, (3) Oral Traditions and Expressions, (4) Folklore, (5) Traditional Knowledge and Practices. This study starts from intangible cultural heritage of three traditional temples in Taiwan. The study separately analyzes the design of courses in different temples. One is focusing on Jade Emperor (God) as the main God, another is about Baosheng Emperor (God of Medicine) as the main God, the other shows the various local ceremony in the temple through the traditional music “Beiguan”. This study combined the characteristics of intangible cultural heritage in three temples, Tainan Jade Emperor Temple, Tainan Sing-ji Temple and Hsinchu Chang Ho Temple, with national curriculum guidelines to explore multidisciplinary knowledge on-site in traditional temples. Finally, it came out three on-site learning courses. Besides, the study found that combining traditional and modern information into one course was a better way to attract students’ study motivation and to gain good learning effect.
Fang-jay RONG received his B.S. degree and M.A. degree in Architecture from the Fang-chia University and National Cheng-kung University, in 1998 and 2000, respectively. In 2008, he received his Ph.D. degree in Architecture from the National Cheng-kung University in Tainan, Taiwan. Over the period of 2009-2012, he worked in the Bureau of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture. He is an associate professor at the National Hsinchu University of Education in Taiwan. His major research interests lie in heritage conservation management and heritage education.
