Decarbonization of the build environment is paramount to combat the effects of climate change. Many new buildings are constructed with materials that have high embodied energy and enormous impact on the environment. However there is a large stock of existing traditional architecture that are built in response to locality in culture and materials. The research examines the how Himachal Pradesh North Institute has led in the reuse and adaptation of existing Kathkuni buildings. Their efforts contributes to the circularity in material culture, innovation, craftsmanship and reduction in negative impact on the environment. In addition, it maintains the building traditions of the locality and training of future designers and artists on how to adapt and reuse these heritage buildings.
John Odhiambo – At Notre Dame, I lead an interdisciplinary lab Build+Perform@nd that aims to understand causes and consequences of design decisions and their impact on the environment and people’s health and well-being. It uses evidence-based research to study the design, construction and operation of Sustainable Traditional Buildings and Cities. My research focuses on understanding influences behind design decisions and impacts of such decisions upon the built environment and human health and happiness.
