This presentation reflects on a Green and Blue Space Design Module at the University of the West of Scotland, developed to meet RTPI accreditation while exploring multi-benefit climate adaptation. The module integrates experiential, collaborative, and reflective pedagogies, challenging students to apply conceptual knowledge to real-world urban design problems. Through fieldwork, design projects and structured reflection, students develop professional competencies including ethical awareness, evidence-based decision-making and critical thinking. Focusing on the creation of resilient, inclusive, and liveable urban environments, the module draws on international examples of green and blue infrastructure to explore the social, environmental and economic dimensions of urban sustainability. Students critically engage with challenges such as climate adaptation, equitable access to public space and integrated urban design, applying concept-led learning to diverse spatial contexts. This case study demonstrates how applied learning can prepare emerging planners to navigate the contradictions inherent in contemporary cities. Ensuring they can balance innovation with equity, sustainability with economic pressures and design excellence with social responsibility. It contributes to broader debates on liveable cities, climate-adaptive planning and participatory design, showing how education can cultivate practitioners capable of shaping cities that are simultaneously liveable, resilient and socially just.
Sarah Crowe is a Chartered Town Planner, Chartered Manager, Recognised Practitioner in Urban Design and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She bridges urban planning, placemaking and community engagement, focusing on blue green infrastructure and participatory approaches to create inclusive, resilient places.
