The urban planning curriculum has not evolved enough to tackle the environmental and social challenges we are facing. We present the results of five years of experimentation in class with extreme scenarios related to ageing, climate change and resource depletion. Reflections and warnings about the depletion of resources and the pressure derived from maintaining the paradigm of continuous growth have been incorporated into the analyses and proposals made by the students from the outset. The effort to relate the subject to current challenges has increased student interest and motivation, placing them in a well-founded position to carry out a critical analysis of public policies and develop proposals that address the problems of maintaining the developmentalist paradigm and pay greater attention to sustainability.
