This paper explores the physical and virtual interactions of a mixed media project, Conversations with Trees, which reflects community connections with trees through a visual narrative installation and an immersive experience. During the 2024 spring semester, visual communication design students selected trees from the Oval, a renowned campus green space, to study their forms and environmental significance. Experts from the University’s Learning Garden and Sustainability Institute provided interdisciplinary insights into various tree species, inspiring students to create photographic narratives that captured the emotional, social, political, and ecological dimensions of their chosen trees. These narratives were presented in 14-page printed accordion books and exhibited during the Spring 2024 Arbor Day Celebration on campus, promoting environmental responsibility and appreciation. This summer, the course instructor is collaborating with designers from the University’s Emerging Technology Studio to incorporate an Augmented Reality (AR) experience. Through AR technology, viewers will see the physical installation overlaid with digital tree leaves from the Oval. This additional component will offer dynamic interactions for an expanded autumn exhibition, reaching a broader audience beyond the campus. By exploring how design and nature can foster a sense of belonging and how digital innovations can complement, rather than overshadow traditional spaces, this installation aims to encourage deeper social engagement and provoke thoughtful interaction with our surroundings. The project concludes with reflections from students, sponsors, and designers, examining how the integration of AR technology and a biophilic approach can inspire community dialogues and engage people in conversations about nature, design, well-being, coexistence, and interconnectedness.
