The presentation would be examination of a digital color picking app exercise, “Grab the Color and Run,” as a case study in the use of technology in a college level design studio or color theory class. The exercise uses a basic digital color picking apps readily available to design students to create a color scheme that is derived from either a design concept based on the Color Psychology, or a specific place based on the elements of Biophilic Design. The color scheme created by the App becomes the starting point for developing and applying a color palette in the selection of the student’s FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment) throughout the design process. The case study would develop general takeaways on the use of technology in design studios with the four tenets of UNESCO’S 2023 GEM Report”: Global education monitoring report summary, 2023: technology in education: a tool on whose terms? titled “Technology in education: A tool on whose terms? 1. Is it appropriate? 2. Is it equitable? 3. Is it scalable? 4. Is it sustainable? These takeaways from this analysis will be valuable as current evidence on the impact of digital technology in the design pedagogy of higher education deserves another look.
Betty Torrell, NCIDQ, IDEC, ASID, LEEP AP is an Associate Professor and Program Director of the Interior Design Program in the SA+P (School of Architecture and Planning) at Morgan State University. HBCU in Baltimore, Maryland. One of Torrell’s research interests is emerging technologies and techniques in visual communication, including the use of digital applications as tools for teaching design fundamentals in studio classes exploring the use of color as a design element that informs and supports the project’s design concept.
