The integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), particularly large language models (LLMs), offers transformative opportunities to advance the intellectual and psychological development of students in higher education. This presentation explores how the principles of compassionate pedagogy—rooted in empathy, inclusivity, and holistic support—align with the GenAI digital turn to enhance students’ academic growth and personal wellbeing. Drawing from our ongoing research and forthcoming book chapter, “Cultivating Strong Minds: Leveraging GenAI for Academic Growth and Personal Wellbeing”, we demonstrate how GenAI technologies can cultivate students’ cognitive and psychological skills to better equip them for our complex world and rapidly evolving employment landscape. Central to our approach is a specialised workshop that challenges neoliberal influences and traditional Western hierarchical, binary language patterns while fostering students’ critical skills to engage with GenAI/LLMs for personalised intellectual and emotional development. By embedding principles of compassionate pedagogy, the workshop nurtures agile mindsets and openness to new technologies. It also assists retention by creating a supportive and inclusive educational environment. Accordingly, this presentation offers insights on: 1. The potential of integrating LLMs to foster both academic mastery and psychological resilience. 2. Addressing systemic biases through alternative, non-hierarchical linguistic frameworks that empower students. 3. Strategies to support student welfare through engagement with GenAI technologies. Ultimately, this presentation provides practical methods and a deeper understanding of how compassionate pedagogy, coupled with AI innovations, can advance academic excellence, holistic wellbeing, and retention in the modern academy.
