The increase in tourism has an impact on public spaces in the central historic districts of large cities. A study was carried out in the central district of Prague 1 to identify and analyse the consequences of the increasing tourist flow. The analysis of anthropological studies on tourism, a review of the infrastructure of the central districts and statistical data pointed to the absence of institutions oriented towards permanent residents, which limits the possibilities for the development of local culture and identity formation. Despite the significant contribution of tourism to the municipal budget, there is an increase in the cost of maintaining the urban environment. A separate problem is the increase in crime. The results are discussed in the context of sustainable development of public spaces and the justification for managing tourism intensity, among others, and the need for further research to develop a strategy for local identity development in city centres is highlighted.
