S. Cottart
9:00 am - 10:30 am

Abstract

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced rapidly, becoming an integral tool across various aspects of daily life. Its transformative potential in education is undeniable, especially in how instructors and students are beginning to utilize AI for more productive and enriching learning experiences. One area where this potential is being actively explored is within language education, where AI tools like ChatGPT are increasingly integrated to enhance student learning and self-expression. This presentation will examine the application of AI—specifically, ChatGPT—in advanced French composition courses. The focus will be on how this tool supports students in producing more sophisticated, polished, and complex writing. Through a structured, multi-step writing process that adheres to clear pedagogical guidelines, we will explore how ChatGPT fosters critical thinking, linguistic accuracy, and creativity, while also addressing its limitations. Examples of student-generated work will be presented and analyzed to showcase the impact of AI-enhanced writing on language development. The session will culminate with practical recommendations for incorporating AI tools like ChatGPT into foreign language curricula. Additionally, considerations for assessing AI-assisted content within a structured writing framework will be discussed. This critical yet forward-thinking approach bridges traditional language instruction with cutting-edge technology, offering students a unique opportunity to develop advanced writing skills while meaningfully engaging with AI.
