In response to the evolving landscape of higher education driven by academic capitalism, this paper builds upon the emergence of lecturers as ‘reluctant academic entrepreneurs.’ As universities worldwide increasingly adopt market-driven practices, lecturers find themselves navigating new roles beyond traditional teaching and research. Within this context, the concept of “intrapreneurship” has emerged as a significant aspect of the academic role. An intrapreneur is an individual who behaves like an entrepreneur within their organisation, taking initiative to innovate, drive change, and pursue opportunities for growth and development. Based on primary data gathered through online questionnaires and interviews, this paper sheds light on the opportunities and challenges encountered by academics in UK universities who are increasingly expected to take on intrapreneurial roles within their institutions. Challenges arise from the heightened emphasis on intrapreneurial tasks, which conflict with academic values and pedagogy. There are, however, opportunities for academics who embrace an intrapreneurial role, as they can reinforce their position by bringing additional value to their institution and adopting pedagogic practice that values innovation and creativity. These challenges and opportunities are not unique to UK universities but are echoed in institutions across the globe, highlighting broader trends in the evolving landscape of higher education. In summary, this paper contributes to the ongoing dialogue on the evolving roles of academics in higher education. By exploring intrapreneurship in academia, it sheds light on the challenges and opportunities inherent in adopting entrepreneurial initiatives within academic settings.
