To meet the major challenges of the 21st century, cities will not only need to accommodate the growing populations, but also respond to the challenges of ageing and insufficient transport infrastructure, growing inequalities particularly on the urban fringe, increasing air pollution and increasing rates of road injury and non-communicable disease. Building cities that are sustainable, productive and capable of delivering an environment conducive to health and well-being is an urgent priority. This presentation will highlight opportunities to develop sustainable cities globally. The presentation will outline unique modelling from our research lab that explores city design with respect to transport systems, highlighting important opportunities on a pathway towards achieving zero emissions.
