Urban ponds, often overlooked as mere water bodies, possess the potential to foster social connections and community engagement. This research seeks to understand how these spaces can contribute to stronger, more inclusive societies by examining the relationship between urban ponds, urban design, and community building. By delving into historical and cultural contexts, including cross-cultural explorations and specific case studies in Kerala, the research highlights the past social significance of urban ponds as reflected in art, literature, and community practices. This understanding informs the development of design strategies that not only revitalize these spaces but also reconnect communities with their cultural heritage. Analysis of selected secondary and primary case studies along with expert interviews helped to develop a comprehensive framework for integrating urban ponds into the urban fabric. The research further explores how thoughtful design interventions can enhance the social value of urban ponds. The findings of this research contribute to the growing field of blue urbanism by providing practical urban design strategies for creating more inclusive and socially vibrant urban environments that caters to more equitable, healthy and resilient urban communities.
