The emergence of immersive Augmented Reality (AR) environments marks a transformative moment in architectural practice, enabling the simulation of architectural ambiances through real-time, multi-sensory spatial experiences. By integrating advanced digital technologies, AR extends beyond traditional visualization methods to foster enriched sensory engagement, deeper user experience, and critical reflection. Most recent studies indicate that users’ interactions with immersive AR, where real and virtual objects coexist and interact, significantly influence their learning outcomes and overall experience. This presentation proposes an analytical framework to structure and enhance the learning potentials of AR within architecture design studios, aiming to foster more vibrant, inclusive, and ethically grounded educational activities. Focusing on innovative learning strategies developed for the design studio at The University of Oslo, this study investigates the digital tools and techniques that facilitate new modes of exploration, interaction, and interpretation of architectural ambiances. By emphasizing real-time image representation integrated with physical prototypes, the University of Oslo case study exemplifies how AR empowers architects to communicate, prototype, and iterate ambiance-oriented designs in previously unimaginable ways. The primary goal is to demonstrate how AR-based ambiance simulation positions digital technologies as essential instruments for creating, evaluating, and ethically stewarding the sensory qualities of architectural space. Through this presentation, I will highlight AR’s relevance not only for simulating architectural ambiance but also for ethically informing future pedagogies in architecture design education.
