Urban Transformation and Public Safety: Insights from Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme Case Studies in Rotterdam and Bergen
S. Barreto et al.
11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Abstract

This article delves into two case studies examining urban transformation and public safety in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and Bergen (Norway). Commencing in September 2022, Inholland University of Applied Sciences (The Netherlands), Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (Norway), and the University of Porto (Portugal) initiated an Erasmus+ sponsored Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). The primary objective of this program is to identify challenges pertaining to urban planning and public safety, conduct a thorough analysis of these challenges, and formulate directions towards creative and feasible solutions. The program comprises teaching staff and students from the three participating universities. The research methodology employed in both case studies included on-site observation, visual analysis, and statistical data. The results derived from both case studies are centred on a set of recommendations towards creative and feasible solutions for enhancing safety in the studied areas. Additionally, students were introduced to the concept of global citizenship, fostering their comprehension of professionalism, societal responsibilities, and the intercultural, international, and global dimensions inherent in their future profession.

Susana’s scholarly inquiry is focused on the role of ethics in visual communication, design and crime, cross-cultural design and plural narratives in design through local stories. For the past couple of years, Susana has been involved in a number of research projects focusing on the preservation of specialised knowledge at risk of disappearance that is embedded in individual experiences of retired professors and artists, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of arts, crafts, and design.

Miguel Saraiva, PhD in Territorial and Environmental Planning, is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography of the University of Porto. He is an expert in modelling and analyzing, using GIS tools, the relationships between urban morphology /design, and specific types of land-use and behavior patterns, paying particular attention to the geographical and environmental perspectives of urban safety and quality-of-life, within the frameworks of territorial and social cohesion. He has coordinated/been part of several national and international projects, written over 20 papers in WoS/Scopus-indexed Journals and recently edited Springer’s The Urban Book Series ‘Urban Crime Prevention: Multi-disciplinary Approaches’

Manuel López, ICCP-certified at the highest international level, is a CPTED authority, researcher and PhD candidate at Inholland University of Applied Sciences. With over 30 years in public safety, his expertise has guided policy for Dutch and Asian agencies. His academic focus is the nexus of crime science and built environments, applying advanced data science and statistical analysis. Notable works include the authoritative Dutch CPTED handbook.

Akkelies van Nes has PhD in Land use planning and is professor at the department of Civil Engineering at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. She has been leading and involved in several international research projects related to mobility and network characteristics, such as revealing the relationship between space and energy use for transport, space and crime in neighbourhoods, street life, urban centres and economic development, applying space syntax in regenerating urban areas, developing theories on the relationship between urban space and urban sustainability. The core of her research activities is developing and applying various spatial analyses tools on built environments on various scale levels and test them on various socio-economic data, results from other research, and energy data.
