Istanbul’s skyline and urban physiognomy have undergone significant transformations over centuries, shaped by diverse architectural traditions, political forces, and socio-cultural dynamics. Historically shaped by Ottoman imperial and levantines architects and the contributions of ethno-religious communities such as Greeks, Armenians, and Jews, the city’s silhouette was a testament to pluralistic coexistence. However, this delicate balance has faced disruption not only through modern urbanization and unsound construction practices but also through persistent political domination, which has redefined the city’s skyline and cultural identity. This paper examines the historical trajectory of Istanbul’s silhouette, focusing on the strategies employed by Ottoman-era architects and the efforts of marginalized communities to assert their presence in the built environment. These contributions are juxtaposed with the impositions of modern-day power structures that have blurred the city’s physiognomy. The discussion highlights how contemporary interventions, driven by political and economic interests, undermine Istanbul’s architectural coherence, erasing layers of its cultural memory and marginalizing diverse voices. By situating Istanbul’s skyline transformation within broader themes of urban identity, heritage conservation, and socio-political power, this study explores the city as a contested space. It argues for the need to reclaim Istanbul’s urban narrative by integrating inclusive architectural practices and policies that prioritize the preservation of its historical silhouette. Ultimately, this paper contributes to global discussions on urban livability, resilience, and the protection of world heritage cities from socio-political domination.
