This paper investigates the relationship between cultural heritage, urban design, and technological innovation. As cities evolve, it is necessary to respect local traditions while embracing modern advancements. Through case studies—such as the revitalization of the Ping Shan Heritage Trail in Hong Kong and the preservation of Jinli Ancient Street in Chengdu—I demonstrate how thoughtful design can enhance civic engagement and foster a deeper sense of community.
The Ping Shan Heritage Trail exemplifies how historical spaces can be revitalized into cultural hubs. This project preserves the area’s rich heritage while integrating modern technologies, including mobile apps that guide visitors through historical sites, enhancing the visitor experience and encouraging community interaction. Similarly, Jinli Ancient Street blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary urban life, attracting residents and tourists while celebrating Chengdu’s heritage. I also explore the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in urban planning. Utilizing AI-driven analytics allows cities to assess community needs more effectively, leading to responsive design solutions. This integration enhances accessibility and fosters public engagement. These case studies address urban challenges like gentrification, social inequality, and environmental sustainability-issues relevant in cities worldwide. Ultimately, this paper invites a reconsideration of how merging cultural heritage with technological innovation can create vibrant, inclusive urban spaces deeply connected to their historical roots. Key Topics of the Talk: • The significance of cultural heritage in urban design; • Case studies from Hong Kong and Chengdu • Community engagement through design • The role of AI in cultural heritage preservation • Addressing urban challenges like gentrification and inequality • Creating inclusive and vibrant urban environment
