Strand Call: Pedagogies of Resistance: Defuturing Literacy and Speculative Thinking

Education is never neutral: it either reproduces unsustainable systems or helps us resist and reimagine them. This track explores the role of pedagogy in cultivating resistance to defuturing practices: those that narrow possibility, deepen inequity, or accelerate unsustainable futures. At the same time, it highlights the need for speculative thinking: the capacity to design, narrate, and visualize alternatives beyond the limits of the present.

We invite contributions that engage with:

Defuturing literacy as the ability to read critically across technologies, cultures, and disciplines to recognize when education forecloses rather than opens futures.

Speculative practices: design, storytelling, visual methods—that help students and teachers imagine otherwise.

Pedagogies of resistance that confront ecological crisis, algorithmic bias, colonial legacies, and other forces shaping educational futures.

Cross-disciplinary experiments that merge critical analysis with creative speculation to sustain viable futures of learning.

This strand positions education as a site of both critique and creativity: resisting the closures of the present while cultivating literacies and imaginations for worlds still possible.

Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes

The UAA is a public institution, sensitive to its social environment, recognized nationally and internationally thanks to the work and performance of its high-quality members. In addition to training professionals and citizens with the technical skills and tools essential for success in today’s society, the University educates individuals who are aware of themselves, others, and their environment so that, through scientific thought and humanism, they can impact the comprehensive development of their community.

Our educational Model is based on the fundamental mission of training students and generating knowledge. We seek to forge a new vision of education that places students as the centre, that supports their integration into the knowledge society of the 21st century and fosters their active participation in the processes of social change that lead to a more humane, fairer world with respect for nature.
