Event: 24 – 26 June, 2026 | Abstracts: 15 July, 2025
The History & Cultural Studies strand of this conference is interested in questions of art history, social history, cultural studies and cultural heritage as both subjects of academic research and as disciplines with their own unique pedagogies.
The conference itself forms part of the Focus on Pedagogy series. It examines the future of education across disciplines in an era of unprecedent change: A worldwide pandemic that distanced the educator from the learner. The emergence of AI. The continued diversification of the student body. The decolonization of the curriculum. The incorporation of sustainability and resilience into our teaching, and much more.
Reflecting on this scenario from the historic city of Madrid, we draw on an educational history that is deep-rooted: the city is home to the Royal Spanish Academy, the internationally renowned Instituto Cervantes and some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe. With this in mind, the conference is interested in exploring critical perspectives on the future of education in specific disciplines and across disciplinary boundaries, but is equally interested in understanding their individual pasts and maintaining what is strong and functions well in the way we teach today.
Themes include:
Case studies of art & architectural history, innovative teaching in the cultural sector, the role of educational technology in humanities teaching and pedagogical innovations in social history, advances in heritage studies, and more.
Other themes:
Teaching & Learning | Methods, modes of practice and innovations in both how we address research questions and how we teach core competencies across the humanities and social sciences.
Art & Design | Examples of innovative collaborations between artists, designers and social scientists in both teaching and research.
Health & Wellbeing | Considerations of how questions of mental health are socially framed and how cross-disciplinary social research informs health and wellbeing practice in the ‘field’ and in the classroom.
Built Environments | Examinations of how works of literature, film and sociological research have explored and influenced design teaching and practice across architecture, urban design and planning.
Science & Technology | Considerations of how technologies like AI inform the humanities and social sciences – whether as a subject or genre in literature, or as a tool for research and teaching.
