Event: 24 – 26 June, 2026 | Abstracts: 15 July, 2025
The Built Environments strand of this conference is interested in questions of all aspects of the design and planning of our built environment as both subjects of academic research and as disciplines with innovative pedagogies to share.
The conference forms part of the Focus on Pedagogy series. It examines the future of education across disciplines in an era of unprecedent change: A worldwide pandemic that distanced the educator from the learner. The emergence of AI. The continued diversification of the student body. The decolonization of the curriculum. The incorporation of sustainability and resilience into our teaching, and much more.
Reflecting on this scenario from the historic city of Madrid, we draw on an educational history that is deep-rooted: the city is home to the Royal Spanish Academy, the internationally renowned Instituto Cervantes and some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe. With this in mind, the conference is interested in exploring critical perspectives on the future of education in specific disciplines and across disciplinary boundaries, but is equally interested in understanding their individual pasts and maintaining what is strong and functions well in the way we teach today.
Themes include:
Case studies of innovative architecture and teaching, best practice urban planning, examples of sustainability embedded in teaching and ecology informed landscape architecture studios, to name but a few examples. Thinking beyond our disciplinary fields, we seek papers on participatory planning projects, interdisciplinary design initiatives, partnerships between academia & practice, and more.
Other themes:
Teaching & Learning | Methods, modes of practice and innovations in both how we teach building technology and construction, and what we research in design and planning.
Art & Design | Case studies of collaboration between the art and design disciplines and professionals and educators in the built environment.
Humanities & Social Sciences | Examinations of innovative education and research on socio-cultural readings of our cities, architecture, landscapes and public spaces.
Science & Technology | Presentations on the smart city, AI, parametric architecture, VR in spatial design and big data analysis of cities.
Health & Wellbeing | Presentations on Covid-19, design for life, sick building syndrome, care in the community, healthy cities, sanitation and public health, and more.
